It's all enough to make Thorson question what he has done with his life. Biography depicting real-life bounty hunter Ralph "Papa" Thorson and his exploits of bringing criminals to jail who jumped bail. He also has a pregnant girlfriend who's expecting a child soon. Subplot involves an old enemy seeking revenge at Thorson for bringing him to jail. THE HUNTER is a contemporary thriller notable for being Steve McQueen's last role before his untimely death from cancer in 1980. The surprise is that he barely seems to have aged since his days in THE BLOB and he delivers a stylish, cool, and likable performancealways throughout his career. McQueen plays a bail bondsman on the track of various criminal and fugitives who have absconded from the law, and the film's narrative juxtaposes his everyday work with his fraught home life involving a girlfriend with a baby on the way. The film looks and feels a little similar to the DIRTY HARRY series, although it's much more of a character drama. Saying that, it closes out with an extended chase climax through the city which really thrills. There are moments of greatness from McQueen in this, his final picture. That persona of cool that he will always be remembered for is put to the test one more time. The story isn't unique or earth shattering, but die hard fans of the legendary star will not be disappointed.
